Welcome to Fifth Grade Band
Students are learning and improving upon the following concepts
1)Posture- (sitting up tall, backs away from the chairs, legs uncrossed, feet off of cases and feet flat on the floor)
2) Tone quality- full tone, that is not squeaky or airy sounding.
3) Dynamics, Balance and Blend-
Dynamic changes ( following dynamic markings in the music -
forte (f)- loud, piano (p) - soft, mezzo forte -( mf )- medium loud, mezzo piano (mp)- medium soft
Balance - deciding how loud or soft to be depending on the part you have ( melody should be louder than harmony- but we still need to hear both parts)
Think of the pizza - toppings are the harmony- they make everything sound nice- by themselves it would be strange to eat just the toppings but added to the main pizza or the melody it makes the melody sound very nice and it makes the pizza extra tasty.
Students have also been working on fitting into each other's sound
4) Scales - students are developing and expanding their range on their instruments - first scale studied Concert Bb major, second scale concert Eb major- more scales will be studied throughout the year.
5)Note reading- students were shown the steps to mastering note reading and are responsible for coming to class having practiced all measures discussed in class rehearsals- if students return to class not being able to name notes, rhythms and fingerings quickly about measures assigned for homework practice they will be considered unprepared for class which lower their grades.
6)Technique- building strength and facility around different notes on the instrument
7) Famous musicians - related to their instrument through short written assignments
8) Three Spring concert pieces - "Magnificent Seven", "The Sesame Street Theme", "TO BE ANNOUNCED...shortly"
** As a reminder, students have practice logs that are due back every two weeks. A minimum of 20-25 minutes per day every day for at least four or five days a week is required. A total of 85 minutes per week is required for minimum amount of practice. Any smaller amounts of time is not sufficient for making significant progress on their instruments.
