Ms. Gallo's/ Ms. Nicholson's & Ms. Huber's Recorder Ensemble Thursdays Period 6
Students in this section of third grade recorder have been studying the following concepts:
1) Correct Posture/Playing Position for playing the recorder:
a) Sitting up tall with back away from chair
b) using the left hand on top (even if the student is right handed) ** only exception to this is if they have limited use of their left hand due to medical injury.
c)using the fleshy part of their fingers to cover the entire hole (if any part of the hole is uncovered the sound produced will be squeaky.
2) Developing Good Tone Quality
a) Students have learned that they must only take a tiny portion of the mouthpiece into their mouth- taking too much mouthpiece will produce a squeaky tone.
b) Students have learned that in order to produce a beautiful tone they only need to blow into their recorder at the volume level of a "WHISPER" ... overblowing will produce a squeaky loud harsh sound.
c) Students have also learned that if they do not cover the holes completely it will produce a squeaky sound.
3) Music is a language ...
Several components to reading music...
a) Rhythm- students have learned how to recognize and count and clap the following rhythms quarter notes, half notes and whole notes (rhythms tell students how long or short to play each note)
b)Letter Names & the Staff-
-Students have learned that the Staff is made up of five lines and four spaces.
- Recorder reads from treble clef which tells the order of the musical alphabet on the staff.
- The musical alphabet only has seven letters : A, B, C, D, E, F, G and then the letters repeat.
- So far in Ms. Gallo/Nicholson & Ms. Huber's class we have only learned to read and play the letters
B,A, and G.
-Students have learned that the letter names "live" on different line numbers or space numbers of the
staff.
- Students refer to their method book "It's Recorder Time" for fingerings and for learning where each letter name lives on the staff.
4)Spring Music- Students are continuing their musical studies by learning the letter names " High C" & "High D". The first song they will be working on for the spring concert is "Go Tell Aunt Rhody".
-Students are expected not to write the letter names in their book, but be able to read the letter names and know the fingerings for the two line song.
